Saskatchewan supports a large and dynamic infrastructure establishing it as one of the world's leading centers in agricultural biotechnology. The research complex, surrounding the University of Saskatchewan, provides a vertically integrated infrastructure for the development of agricultural products. In the agriculture sector it is possible "to go from DNA to the dinner plate" - Saskatoon is truly "Chlorophyll Valley North". It has become the mecca for companies wishing to do oil seed research.

AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLGY A World Leader

Key players include:
- The U of S College of Agriculture
- Crop Development Centre
- The Western College of Veterinary Medicine
- VIDO
- The NRC Plant Biotechnology Institute
- The Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada Research Station
- The POS Pilot Plant together

Saskatchewan is one of the world’s leading centers in agricultural biotechnology. The Innovation Place research complex, surrounding the University of Saskatchewan, provides a vertically integrated infrastructure for the development of agricultural products. In the agriculture sector is possible “to go from DNA to the dinner plate” – Saskatoon is truly “Chlorophyll Valley North”. It has become the mecca for companies wishing to do oil seed research.

THE HUMAN BIOSCIENCES

While the ag-biotech sector is mature in Saskatchewan the other bio-sciences are just beginning to gain momentum. The first “home grown” human pharmaceutical company was Pharmaderm, created by a Professor from the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition. This company, which focused on drug delivery systems, has now merged with Helix Biopharma of Aurora Ontario. A second company, Pharmalytics Inc., specializing in drug metabolism, drug disposition and therapeutic equivalency, recently evolved from the same College. Alviva Biopharmaceuticals Inc. was created in 1998 by scientists from the Neuropsychiatric Research Unit in the College of Medicine. Alviva holds a number of patents on potential therapeutic agents for neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
