Regional Advantages
Some of the competitive advantages this region has to offer include the excellent technological and telecommunications infrastructure that supports the ability to adapt to and take a leading role in the new economy of the information age.
Saskatchewan offers the least-regulated telecommunications market in Canada. This has driven the pioneering achievements and world-class abilities in information technologies, telecommunications and advanced technologies.
With lower business and industrial costs than other jurisdictions, central time zone and central North American location and excellent transportation services, a lower cost of living and healthy, safe and positive lifestyle can be achieved.
Local Expertise
One of the early spin-off companies from the University of Saskatchewan was SED Systems Inc., created in 1972 by faculty from the Space Engineering Division. In the early 1960s these faculty had collaborated with others in the Institute of Upper Atmospheric Studies on measurement of phenomena within within the northern lights using instumentation in rockets fired from Churchill Manitoba. This company, now owned by Calian Technology Ltd. of Otawa, continues to design and produce hardware and software for ground-to-satellite-communication systems for installations around the world. The progeny od SED Systems include Pakwa Engineering, Scientific Instruments Ltd., Sci-Tech Instruments Ltd. and Saskatoon Machine Works to name but a few.
